Art Piece #9 - Self Portrait

I think until school is over, I may just be posting a few art pieces here and there. I really haven't had much to write about since the reviews ended back in February, and school is continuing to bog me down with a lot of work, pushing all of our noses into the grindstone until they bleed. Oh well. Just two more weeks!

So, today I present something I did back in my freshman year.

Self Portrait. 14" x 11". Pencil. 2008.

When enrolled in a figure drawing class, you should expect to draw perhaps hundreds of basic human figure poses -- and equally expect your big projects to be drawings of human figures. There were many times during this particular class in which we were encouraged to do portraits, whether of yourself or other people. The idea was to help us understand human anatomy.

This was the result of numerous portrait exercises. After drawing ourselves, we were also tasked with including images of things that reflected our interests and personality. The drawing shows me holding my guitar. Back then I was much more interested in learning guitar (I REALLY need to get back into it). The sort of cloudy atmosphere surrounding my head was meant to imply the fact that my head is generally in the clouds. All my life I've been the type of person who tends to get lost in his own world.

The other images simply represent my liking of reading, writing, music, and art in general. Simple, really, but it met the requirements.

Art Piece #7 - Facing House Atlantic

As if I haven't shown this enough already, Coheed and Cambria have been a big part of my life in the last half decade. From music to books to comics and to art, Claudio Sanchez's story has influenced me and inspired me in many ways.

Since I've been working on the song reviews for No World for Tomorrow, I felt it would be appropriate to show another drawing I did several years ago.

Facing House Atlantic. 14" x 10". Pencil. 2008.

When I created this drawing for my figure drawing class a few years ago. The goal was invoke an emotion in the viewer. My intent was uncertainty and loneliness. As you might notice, this drawing looks very similar to the album cover art for NWFT.

The difference lies in perspective (and also the depiction of House Atlantic, but oh well. The difference in perspective means a great deal. Whereas the album cover looks like Claudio Kilgannon is determined, ready, and certain. The idea for recreating this image in a different perspective makes Claudio look less so. I wanted to show a more vulnerable side to Claudio. A side that, however certain he might be in taking down Wilhelm Ryan, he's still human. There is fear, some uncertainty, and perhaps even a bit of loneliness within Claudio's soul as he realizes he must undertake his quest by himself.

This drawing took a week and a half to finish. It's hard to see, but there's a shrouded sun behind House Atlantic (barely noticeably as nothing more than a curve), House Atlantic itself, and then Claudio. The biggest problem I have with this is the lack of contrast. I was not always great at contrast back then, my professors often brought it up to me.

Either way, I'm proud of the result.

Art Piece #6 - The Darkness Within

The Darkness Within. 8 1/2" x 11". Pencil. 2005.

This is another drawing inspired by The Legend of Zelda video games, with another specific reference to Ocarina of Time. As with the previous drawing, I made this several years ago as a submission to a fan art gallery back when I was, shall we say, a much bigger Zelda geek. Ah, the good ol' days...

I personally like that I made Ganondorf's twisted, more evil alter-ego stand in roughly the same position as himself. Though the sizes are clearly not to scale -- Ganon's much bigger than I drew him out to be -- I still like the end result.

Art Piece #5 - Child Link

Child Link. 8 1/2" x 11". Pencil. 2005.

I don't really put this under the category of my artwork. It was just something I did years ago for no reason other than I was bored. I just felt like tossing it up today. If you enjoy The Legend of Zelda, then enjoy this drawing!

Art Piece #2 - Texture in Detail

After finishing up the first set of song reviews last night, I remembered a drawing I worked on a few years ago that was based on The Second Stage Turbine Blade album cover.

Texture in Detail. 12" x 9". Pencil and Pen. 2007.

Simply put, it's a drawing of a blown up section of the front cover of the album. For reference, it is the section outlined in black in the following picture:

I completed this drawing in my freshman year 2D Design class, where the objective was to find any surface that had some form of texture on it and draw it out. Though it's not apparent on this given image, the cover of the album does in fact have texture -- the black lines on the wings of the dragonfly protrude from the surface. After finding which bit of texture we wanted to draw, we had to choose a small section of said surface from which we would do the assignment.

The first sketches of the dragonfly wing was done in pencil, as was all of the shading. It took roughly an hour to replicate the design just right for my personal liking. Once the pencil work was finished, I went back in with pen and ink to add some of the darker lines of the wing and other dark spots.

Art Piece #1 - Self Portrait in Texture

I'm not sure if I'll get to a song review today since this is my second post of the day thus far. Instead, I wanted to do something a little different.

I've mentioned how I'd post some artwork here and there, and I decided today's the day to kick that off. Without further ado, I present my first art piece.

Self Portrait in Texture. 11" x 8 1/2". Pencil. 2007.

It really is a self-portrait in texture. Each object is part of who I am and what I like. Though I wear contacts now, I did wear glasses at the time of making this and had been wearing them for about twelve years. The pencils represent my love for drawing and for art. The dream catcher on the far left is indicative of the small but still important Native American blood that runs through my veins. The likely hard to see concert ticket is a reflection of not just my liking for Coheed and Cambria, but for music and concerts in general. Further emphasizing my tie to music are the scattered guitar picks. And as always, there is some representation of Harry Potter and Star Wars seen in the drawing -- the HP symbol and the plastic lightsaber at the very top, respectively.

The point of this project was to demonstrate rendering skill, and the ability to draw objects so they look as realistic as possible. The other objective was to use six materials to draw and show how lighting affects these objects. These materials were: 1.) wood; 2.) leather; 3.) metal; 4.) cloth; 5.) plastic; and 6.) glass. You could see for yourself which objects are which material.

I was fairly happy with the result. Upon reflection I realized it needed more contrast; much of it is too similar in terms of lighting. Still, I'm pleased.
